Market Context

Regulatory and market framework.

IMO 2020 and sulphur compliance

The 0.50% global sulphur cap has been in force since 1 January 2020. Compliance is mandatory for all vessels not equipped with an approved exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber). 55°North procures only IMO 2020-compliant grades unless the vessel has documented scrubber equipment.

Emission Control Areas (ECAs)

The North Sea, Baltic Sea, North American ECA, and US Caribbean ECA require fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.10%. Vessels operating in these areas must use MGO or LSMGO, or have an approved scrubber. 55°North confirms ECA compliance requirements before every stem.

EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)

From 2024, shipping is included in the EU ETS. Vessel operators must surrender allowances for CO2 emissions on voyages to, from, and between EU ports. Documentation requirements apply. 55°North structures delivery documentation to support client ETS reporting obligations.

Price benchmarks

Marine fuel prices are typically benchmarked against Platts or Argus assessments for the relevant port and grade. Prices are subject to market conditions at the time of procurement. 55°North does not guarantee price levels. All pricing is confirmed in writing before execution.
